Recently we went away for a long weekend to Lorne (appoximately 90mins from Melbourne). It was our first trip away with another family, exciting and daunting at the same time, a test to our friendship and families. Our friendship, relatively new (we met through our kids at kinder) had been easy, fun and honest from the offset – would 4 days away together change this?

On our arrival we were instantly excited! The three bedroom townhouse where we stayed (at the end of the main street) was perfectly laid out for the two families and close to all the amenities – beach, park and shops. Lorne is a beautiful and peaceful place to stay with loads of things to do with a young family. There is the beach, a huge park with fun and diverse play equipment, trampolines (the traditional ones from school camps that are in the ground) and mini golf. For the adults, there are an array of boutique shops, Midi, Wolf Whistle, Deluxe – to name a few and a beautiful bookshop ‘the Book’, where I always pick up some amazing treasures. Then there is the numerous cafe’s and eateries. Bottle of Milk is renowed for it’s burgers and you can’t go pass the Lorne Hotel for a classic pub meal.

A 45 minute drive along the Great Ocean Road will see you in Apollo Bay. We stopped here for lunch on our way to Cape Otway Lightstation (approx another 35mins). On the way to the lighthouse, I was thrilled to see Koalas and lot’s of them. It was really a highlight and I found it quite special to share the experience with my boys. The lighthouse is a great thing to do as a tourist (although the height and force of the wind at the top of the lighthouse was a little scary for me!).

So did 4 days away together change anything? Yes, we had such a wonderful time together that our friendship, if anything, was strengthened. Like all good things that come to an end, we didn’t want to leave the tranquility of Lorne, so much so, we are already planning our next trip! Has anyone else been away for a weekender recently, would love you to share?
